Studio notes…
Before becoming an artist I had a variety of jobs, among them trained nurse, plumber, gas engineer, craniosacral therapist and full-time parent.
I'm now in my mid 70s, live in Crediton, Devon, UK and have taken a studio space just off the High Street here.
My development as an artist has been a slow burn, for years masked behind caring for my children and my other careers. But I did lots of classes: pottery, leather craft, basketry, drawing, sculpture and painting. After living in Pisa, Italy for a year from 1999-2000, I decided – finally! – to do a Fine Art degree at Plymouth University’s Exeter Campus. (Not a paintbrush in sight, at that time - instead I used pinhole photography and video as my medium).
So this is how I paint: I just play! that's how the abstract painting started... I drizzled paint down the paper and watched what happened when I stroked a large brush of water across it. Or loaded the brush with different colours, and enjoyed watching them blending and bleeding into each other. I was hooked!
I've developed the 'game' over the last 14 years but those early beginnings – rooted in play – have underpinned what I continue to do today. So I have a sense of wonderment at what emerges as I engage with the process. The painting paints itself through me and I watch, excited by the surprises that happen. I don't really worry about what people might think of the work because I get this deep, deep satisfaction within me.
It nourishes my soul.
